Reading Brewing Company
Made By Kaufmann & Strauss
1886 - 1976
The Reading Brewing Company was founded in 1886 by Philip Bessinger. During the 1890s Reading Brewing produced over 50,000 barrels a year. During Prohibition, the company was caught with too high of a percentage of alcohol in their beer, resulting in the company losing their license to brew New Years Day 1924. It took till the end of prohibition, 10 years later for Reading Brewery to reopen and start brewing again. By 1958 they came up with their most famous tagline “ The Friendly Beer For Modern People”, the brewery rode on this tagline till the 1970s. In 1976 Reading Brewing ceased operations due to pressure from larger brewers. The label has been purchased and revived a few times over the years, most recently in 2019 Sly Fox Brewing has revived the label.
